Foster Grandparent Program
We regret to announce that the Foster Grandparent program, which VNS of Iowa has operated since 2008, will be discontinued effective June 30, 2016 due to funding shortfalls. In 2014-15, Foster Grandparent volunteers provided 81,032 hours of personal support and encouragement to help 844 children. Despite the success of the Foster Grandparent program and the generous funding of key partners, the funding level of the program is inadequate to continue.
Over the past year, our staff and supporters have attempted to raise funds through online efforts such as Crowdrise and Facebook, direct appeals to private and public funders and advocacy for legislative support. Despite everyone's best efforts, the shortfall in funding continues to exist, and the program will be discontinued.
VNS of Iowa has operated the Foster Grandparent program in Polk County since 2008. In 2013, the program expanded to serve Boone, Dallas, Marshall and Story counties. We thank our staff, volunteers, partners, donors and supporters for their tireless efforts to support the Foster Grandparent program and its work with children and older adults.
