The Storybook Project keeps incarcerated parents and their children connected through reading at the Iowa Correctional Institution in Mitchellville and at the Newton Correctional Facility in Newton. Once a month, parents and grandmothers select one book per child and read to their children birth to age 17 through a digital voice recorder with the assistance of a trained volunteer. The stories are burnt onto a CD and mailed, along with the book, to the child. The mission is to strengthen the bond between parent and child during incarceration while promoting reading and literacy.
